Lhasa on Two Wheels - Tibet Episode 10

There are cities where a man goes out for a walk and sees monuments, churches or perhaps a fellow human being feeding pigeons. In Lhasa, he sees scooters. Hundreds of them, perhaps thousands, although I did not count them because I had neither the time nor the necessary qualifications in scooter arithmetic.

They come in all shapes and sizes. Some look like humble electric bicycles that have been promoted beyond their abilities. Others resemble spacecraft designed by an engineer who had too much tea and not enough supervision. There are scooters for the modest citizen, scooters for the ambitious citizen and scooters that seem to have been purchased by people who intend to conquer the world but have decided to begin with the nearest intersection.

They buzz past me, carrying shopping bags, passengers and occasionally loads that would make a European furniture removal company reconsider its business model. The riders seem perfectly comfortable, even when the machine beneath them looks as if it might collapse under the weight of a particularly determined mosquito.
