Przystanek Singapur

Z lotniska Changi do China Town tylko 20 minut za 23 dolary. W porownaniu z innymi azjatyckimi metropoliami Singapur wydaje sie wyludniony.

Rzucilem bagaze w pokoju i ruszylem na 12 kilometrowy spacer.

Red Karen women from Mae Hong Son Province.

Red Karen women.

The representatives of hill tribes in Thailand are disappearing at an alarming rate. I will say they switch to civilian life, leaving their habits and attire. They are been dissolving in Thai society.

Thailand is developing by leaps and bounds, everywhere is electricity, television, and hard-surface roads. If you are really interested in tribal customs and gadgets you should go to Burma.

I was happy when I met a group of women with metal rims on the legs and hands. They wore impressive earrings and metal chokers with house keys.

A woman weaving on the loom sold me her old red blouse and black skirt. ( lucky me :)

*** Mat recorded the geographical coordinates of this village. I will add the location soon.

From Lombok to Sumbawa. Travel by motorcycle.

From Lombok to Sumbawa.

The Lombok Sumbawa ferry departs every hour.
A ticket for a motorcycle and two people costs $ 10.

Statistically speaking the ferries between the two islands do not sink.

The crew is experienced and the ferry is not overloaded.

The warm southern seas breeze whips our faces.
We sail to Labuhan Tano.

Cracking nuts in Flores. Indonesia

We visit some village before we start to look for megalithic graves. Dwellers of Bena or Wogo villages are mostly older people. The women take care of their grandchildren. The Ngadas in their prime work in the big cities of Indonesia and even Malaysia.

As a result of penetration of Flores by Christian missionaries, Ngade culture has lost its roots.

In contrast to Bali and West Sumba, the Ngada culture is l'histoire ancienne.

Be like a Burmese woman. Buy thanaka cream.

Burma is a unique country. I don't mean the backwardness in development and burmese greedy junta.
Men still wear a sarong, and the women apply to their faces thanaka cream there.

Wow, these burmese cheeks :)

The thanaka cream provides protection from sunburn and helps to remove acne and promotes smooth skin.

Buy yourself a thanka cream when you travel in Burma or Thailand.

Support local communities, don't buy all your life product manufactured by multinational corporations.
Keep our world as diverse and rich planet.
The diverse cultures that is our true wealth.

Do the Sasaks from Lombok like the wedding processions ?

The Sasak groom looks totally tired, maybe disgusted ... Many people joined the procession and have fun at his expense. Me too.

The bride with the crown. She looks like she wanted to punch someone. Perhaps me ?

Happiness? You have to earn it.

Ngada women from Flores island.

These five women have two common characteristics:
1/ living in nice, wooden, traditional huts ( sorry: houses ),
2/ chewing furiously betel ( they don't use lipstick )

Mein Kampf - still a bestseller book in Indonesia.

It seems many readers in Indonesia are keen on to know the nazism propaganda. Perhaps the Adolf Hitler's enthusiasm links one proverb : "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" ?

The complete edition on the shelf in one Indonesian bookstore.

Bima Sumbawa. Happy to get a bed. Indonesia

I arrived Bima before dawn.

I stayed at the bus station until the morning.
You may think that it was boring plan. It was quite amusing, not boring at all.
I drank a cup of Indonesian coffee and chatted with people doing business around.

I went on food in search of a hotel. The town had a small selection of accommodation.
I was glad to get a room at hotel near "Sports Field" with the name sounding like in West Africa : Hotel La'mbitu.

A nice receptionist offered me a room on the upper floor for $ 25.

I'd never done any climbing sport at hotels.
But what choice could I get in Nusa Tenggara ? No elevators :-)
I was so glad to get a bed that I was ready to climb up to heaven.

I had a fridge and TV set. What a luxury!

After another two cups of coffee and I went to see the town.

Mataram. A bit of impressionism at the bus station. Indonesia

I hang patiently in Mataram waiting for a bus to Bima on Sumbawa Island.

My each journey is the art of waiting. Waiting to get a new place.
There is not big problem with transport in Indonesia.
The buses are not so comfortable like in Malaysia and Thailand, but still its standard is higher than typical chicken's coaches in Africa.

I hovered around the area before boarding the bus.

I like yellow facades of buildings. People prefer cheerful colors in tropical countries.

Blue color gives a cool impression when hot weather is all year.

Coconuts' vendor painted green his mobile stall. Does the color green is associated with cold drinks for you ?

At these stalls at the bus station food and coffee was served.

What a savoir vivre! A driver helped one old woman to get the bus off.

My travel colleague I Inyoman Warsa at our bus to Bima.
The whole night was ahead of us. I could practice local language.

Indonesian officials like Mataram in Lombok. Indonesia

Ferries in Indonesia are extremely slow. Mussels and crayfish swim faster.
The ferry from Bali to Lombok takes half-day trip.
I came to the port of Lembar already at dusk.

I got a lift with another 4 backpackers after long negotiations with local touts. The travel mates were heading to Senggigi and I got off in Mataram. I knocked to 9 different hotels in the town before I got a room.

It seemed that Indonesian officials travelled and occupied all available accommodation in all Nusa Tenggara.

During my travel throughout the islands the biggest problem was related to finding a hotel room. This was a difficult mission despite the influx of a few tourists in Nusa Tenggara. The backpackers here were in danger of extinction like the dinosaurs in the past. The few hotels were always occupied by the officials, who sat all days at local restaurants.

Ninth hotel. Here I got a room for $ 6. The place was clean, but the mosquitoes didn’t let me sleep.

This hotel was populated with a horde of tourists from Java. Do Indonesians have some holidays in November?

The only one mall in the town is called “Mataram Mall”. There are two internet cafes with old computers and slow connection.

Mataram has over 300 thousand inhabitants. The town looks as deserted.
Maybe it is too much spread out ? It is the capital and largest city of West Nusa Tenggara province.

Cheap, yellow bemos shuttle along main streets.

People in Mataram are friendly and willing to give you an answer and an information.

Mataram is only a stop on the way to Gili Islands. If you need to sleep here, look for a hotel as soon as possible after you arrive.
