In 1999, I travelled across northern Kenya on an expedition from the snow-capped slopes of Mount Kenya to the shores of the Jade Sea.
The journey took me through Samburu country, Turkana lands and the remote shores of Lake Turkana, one of the most extraordinary regions of Africa. I met Samburu and Turkana people, travelled through some of the harshest landscapes I had ever seen, and followed the trail towards one of the places often described as the Cradle of Mankind.
More than twenty-five years later, I have returned to the memories of that journey and put one of my original television reports from Kenya online.
This is Kenya as I saw it in 1999, long before smartphones, social media and instant access to almost every corner of the continent.
The report serves as a kind of time capsule, while a book about Kenya spanning two eras from 1992 to 2028 is only now beginning to take shape.
