Inle Lake. Phaung Daw U Festival. Myanmar.

Inle Lake in Shan State is 22 km long and 10 km wide. Vast body of water is surrunded by 17 villages on stilts. The colorful festival Phaung Daw U takes place here every October.

Huge ceremonial barge makes tour around lake during several days of festival.

The golden barge carries five Phaung Daw U images from village to village. It said the holy statues were made in 12th century.


Spectators follow the barge in long boats. Vessels cavalcade form big hord behind barge.


Burmese soldiers shield the water procession.
